Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Okay, so this doesn’t quite ‘beat’ local drama Recipe of Life, which had Shaun Chen, 42, and Cavin Soh, 49, playing the sons of Huang Biren, 52, in 2019.

But hey, a four-year age difference is nothing to turn your nose up at either.

In 1991, Lee Rock, a Hongkong crime film telling the story of the rise and fall of a corrupt police officer was released.

The film had an all-star cast — think Andy Lau, Sharla Cheung, Chingmy Yau and Ng Man Tat. Lee Rock was an instant success, with a sequel, Lee Rock II, released the same year. Both movies raked in over HKD$53mil (S$9.19mil), as well as multiple nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

1 of 6 A fresh-faced Aaron

Other than following up on the story of titular character Lee Rock, played by Andy, the sequel also introduced a new character — Lee Rock’s son, played by Aaron Kwok.

At the time of filming, Andy was 30, while Aaron was 26. With only a four-year age difference between Andy and Aaron, the casting caused quite a stir at the time.

2 of 6 And an 'older' Andy

However, with the help of special-effects make-up, Andy managed to transform into someone that could arguably pass for a middle-aged man. Kind of.

Here are other notable onscreen parent-child pairings with tiny age gaps.

3 of 6 Stephen Chow (left) and Ng Man Tat (right) in King Of Beggars

Another iconic father-son pairing played by actors who are just a few years apart from each other would be Stephen Chow and the late Ng Man Tat.

The duo played father and son multiple times in films like 1992’s King Of Beggars and 1995’s Sixty Million Dollar Man. Even though Man Tat is just nine years older than Stephen, the former has always looked older than his real age, and this still from King Of Beggars is proof.

  • 4 of 6 Ti Lung & Jackie Chan in Drunken Master II (1994)

The martial arts film saw Hongkong actor Ti Lung (left) playing Wong Kei-ying, while martial arts star Jackie Chan (right) played his son, Wong Fei-hung. Ti Lung was 48 then, while Jackie was 40.

  • 5 of 6 Jet Li & Collin Chou in Fearless (2006)

The film saw frequent collaborators Jet Li (left) and Collin Chou (right) working together once more, this time, as father and son. A 44-year-old Jet played the main character, Huo Yuanjia, while the younger Collin, who was 39 then, played Huo Yuanjia’s dad.

  • 6 of 6 Deng Chao & Eddie Peng in Duckweed (2017)

This 2017 Chinese film about a man (Deng Chao) who travels back in time to meet his father (Eddie Peng) as a young man. Deng Chao was 38 then while Eddie was 35.
