The Hongkong educational system is one of the best in the world and many parents would jump through hoops to secure a spot for their kids in a prestigious school. And yes, that includes nurseries.

Recently, Hongkong singer Steven Cheung, one half of the Canto-pop duo Boyz, took to Instagram to share that his elder son, two-year-old Tin Bo, would be going for an interview that would determine if he would get into a nursery. Steven has another son, Tin Muk, one.

However, what was supposed to be something to look forward to turned out to be an unpleasant experience.

Yesterday (Oct 26), Steven, 36, criticised the school’s principal and claimed that his son was “discriminated against during the interview.

“Actually I am very angry. I have made many mistakes, and it’s not important if you don’t forgive me. But why did the principal have to discriminate against my son and I when we went to enroll in nursery? Doesn’t my son deserve to go to school? Just because he has a father like me, he can't have a footing in society?” ranted Steven, alluding that his past scandals, which we will get to later, have caused his son a place in the nursery.

In his rant, Steven also said: As the principal of a nursery, you spoke as if you would not miss any opportunity to educate children, shouldn’t you make clear that you are not giving my son a chance to study because of me?

He added that he would not reveal the name of the nursery as he didn’t want it to say that [he] affected its reputation .

Steven has been embroiled in several scandals in recent years. In 2019, he suddenly announced that he was marrying model Au Man Man and later shared a photo of Tin Bo’s 100th-day celebration.

The news came as a shock to many because Steven had a long-time girlfriend April Leung, whom he was still dating when he got involved with Au Man Man.

Four other women also came forward to reveal that they too were seeing the singer and had even lent him large sums of money.

Steven’s career and reputation nosedived following the bad press and he later went on hiatus from showbiz, reportedly taking on odd jobs at a hotel to support his family.

Steven’s rant was met with mixed reactions by netizens.

Some felt that as an educational institution, it should offer education to everyone, regardless of their background. Furthermore, the child is innocent and should not be denied admission because of his father.

However, there were netizens who felt that the school did nothing wrong because a prestigious school will definitely look at the parents’ background and occupation .

Others also blamed Steven for his past indiscretions saying that he's the one who implicated his son and so should not be complaining about discrimination.
