Forget Goreng Pisang — Try D24 Goreng Durian Instead

Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Mention goreng pisang and no one bats an eyelid. But deep-fried durian is a whole new level of decadence. Sedap Durian — an online-only brand by halal-certified wholesale bakers J&C Bakery — is offering fritters stuffed with the flesh of D24 durian (it is the season after all). There’s also deep-fried mango for all you durian haters out there.

1 of 5 Tapow away

8days.sg gets our hands on the snacks via delivery. The fritters arrive relatively warm and crisp, though we’re told its best to pop them into the air-fryer, microwave or conventional oven for a few minutes to revive them.

While the batter gets even crunchier than before, do watch out for molten fruit when biting into the snacks. The puree is exceedingly hot, and prone to spillage from unexpected parts of the fritter.

The fritters go for $13 for a box of ten (you can mix and match flavours, as long as they’re in batches of five). Delivery is $8 islandwide, though you can collect them yourself at any J&C bakery outlet below.

  • 2 of 5 Goreng Durian, $13 for 10 pcs

The D24 durian puree has a lush, creamy mouthful, and is mostly sweet with a subtle bitter aftertaste. It’s a little less pungent than eating the fresh fruit, which might please someone with a lower tolerance for the funk but not so much an avid lover of the king of fruit.

As for the batter of plain flour and tapioca starch, it’s light, airy and very crispy. A yummy, savoury foil to the durian within, though one does feel a little guilty after polishing off a piece. It’s undoubtedly heaty, greasy fare — though worth the calories. Just keep some coconut water on standby.

  • 3 of 5 Goreng Mango, $13 for 10 pcs

The latest addition to the menu is also the most addictive. It’s sweeter, yet also tangier and juicier than the other options, which contrasts with the deep-fried coat better. Yummy.

  • 4 of 5 Goreng Cempedak, $13 for 10 pcs

Some call this jackfruit’s stinkier cousin. The natural pungency of cempedak is also less pronounced in this cooked puree form. Not bad, but we prefer the more fibrous ones sold at goreng pisang stalls.
