How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Mention salted egg potato chips and fish skins and you’ll indubitably think of Irvins. The 11-year-old brand is popularly known to have kick-started the craze for salted egg snacks in Singapore and around the region (they’ve since inspired legions of copycats). Unfortunately, it’s also infamous for having dead lizards in its packets of chips. But hopefully, that’s a thing of the past. Now, Irvins is launching its all-new Salted Egg Lava Mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival. This comes a few months after it introduced a salted egg pineapple tart for Chinese New Year.

1 of 7 Stay golden

Of course, the mooncakes come loaded with salted egg yolk — each piece contains oozy liu sha golden yolk custard. There are two filling flavours to choose from: Yam and Mung Bean. The mooncakes are wrapped in silky snow skin spiked with bamboo charcoal powder.

2 of 7 It’s wrapped in Japanese fabric

Each paper box of eight mini mooncakes cost $40, and comes wrapped in Japanese furoshiki fabric (traditional printed wrapping cloth that’s usually used for gifts and bento boxes) with a limited-edition mid-autumn print designed by the snack company. The mung bean mooncakes include a piece of furoshiki cloth in Irvins’ signature black and yellow hues.

3 of 7 Clothes for mooncakes

Meanwhile, the furoshiki cloth for the yam mooncakes is colourful and snazzy.

4 of 7 Mung Bean Lava Mooncake, $40 for eight

The mung bean-flavoured mooncakes contain smooth mung bean paste stuffed with salted egg yolk-spiked custard that apparently oozes out like “lava”.

  • 5 of 7 Yam Lava Mooncake, $40 for eight

The yam mooncakes have blended purple yam paste with salted egg yolk custard.

  • 6 of 7 Freebies lobang

Need a lantern for Mid-Autumn Festival? Irvins is giving away a free paper lantern emblazoned with their chick mascot when you spend $55 and above in a single receipt. Or get a complimentary one at the Night at Orchard event between Wisma Atria and Ngee Ann City on Sept 7, where Irvins is giving away 1,500 free lanterns between 7pm to 9pm. Each mooncake purchase also gets you exclusive Irvins mid-autumn postcards, which you can have mailed for free when you drop them off at Irvins’ mooncake retail outlets.
