KFC’s Sour Cream & Onion Chicken Taste Test: Nice Or Not?
We also try the new Bolognese Cheese Fries.
Sour cream and onion — our go-to flavour when it comes to choosing a bag of chips to veg out in front of the telly. And Bolognese cheese fries? Fun. KFC started offering these two new limited-edition items along with the return of its popular Chocolate Hazelnut Egg Tart from November 21. Of course, we had to try them all.
Our golden-brown drumstick and chicken breast are liberally studded with flakes of crushed nacho chips and what appears to be bits of chives. Looks a bit like cornflakes.
Even if we didn’t know our chook was coated in nacho chips, we’d be able to guess it on first bite: the subtle yet unmistakable flavour of corn and the crunchy-rough texture of the tortilla chips are dead giveaways. Meanwhile, the seasoning sprinkled on the chicken is robust — salty, tangy enough and kinda reminiscent of the flavouring in a can of Sour Cream & Onion Pringles. Even though the chicken is cooked using KFC’s Hot & Spicy recipe, the fieriness is dulled due to the sharp seasoning, which isn’t a bad thing.
These are simply KFC’s Cheese Fries, but draped with minced chicken Bolognese sauce. We’d prefer a bit more cheese on it, but the modest amount present is a decent counterpoint to the tart tomato-based meat sauce (which is not bad, but more like something you could find from a jar).
Quite nice! The piquant chook is a fun marriage of a movie snack and fried chicken. Worth a try if you adore sour cream and onion anything. As for the Bolognese fries — eat it only if you’re really curious.
