Kit Kat's Rainbow-licious & Durian Flavours: Nice Or Not?
We try some of the funky flavours from Kit Kat’s premium Chocolatory range.
The Kit Kat from Kit Kat Chocolatory (the chocolate wafer’s premium handcrafted range) is like your cousin who’s into K-pop fashion and dresses up in wild outfits all the time. The Chocolatory’s flavours are quirky and interesting, and totally unlike the basic original milk chocolate Kit Kats. Think flavours like Rainbow, Traditional Nasi Lemak, Ice Kacang and, er… Durian?
After trying the delish, naturally pink Kit Kat Ruby choc, which was launched in Japan last year, we munch on some of the Chocolatory’s other exciting picks, and here’s our verdict below.
What we tried
This rainbow-hued limited-edition Kit Kat Chocolatory flavour looks fabulous for the ’gram: each wafer is decked out in a white chocolate coat with a pretty swirly pastel design that reminds us of a Paddle Pop ice cream bar. According to its description, it’s infused with two “fruits — Lychee and Lemon” as well as “refreshing peppermint and pistachio”. Promising, but we tasted mostly the cloying white choc, though the crispy wafer that Kit Kat is known for is still as shiok. It’s worth noting that Special Edition Kit Kats are launched at the Chocolatory (the nearest one to Singapore is in Midvalley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur) every two months. And compared to the regular Kit Kat’s shelf life of about nine months, the Chocolatory flavours last only an average of two weeks as they are handmade with no preservatives in the KL Chocolatory outlet. However here in Singapore, you can buy them easily from RedMart. Anyhow, our verdict? This is prettier to look at than to eat — but your kid sister will be thrilled if you get this for her.
Launched at the Chocolatory store in Kuala Lumpur, this halal Nasi Lemak flavour is inspired by the popular breakfast item adored by Malaysians and Singaporeans. But don’t expect a literal version of nasi lemak slathered with chocolate; it’s more of an adapted take with coconut and chilli flakes, and each white chocolate finger is studded with crunchy peanut. We were initially apprehensive to try this savoury choc, but it’s actually pretty tasty: like atas chilli chocolate with a mild spiciness from the chilli, a whiff of coconutty fragrance and a nice crunch from peanut bits.
The refreshing ice kacang treat gets the Kit Kat treatment, in the form of white choc wafers studded with melon bits, sweet corn and peanuts enveloped within a layer of white confectionery. The slab looks gorgeous, but does it taste like ice kacang? Not exactly, but the red bean, corn and melon bits add fun texture to a basic Kit Kat finger. Plus, it’s way easier to ‘tapow’ this for a cute gift. It usually costs $7.50 for a 60g, four-wafer pack, but it’s currently going for $5.62 with a 25% discount on Redmart now.
The ice cream cart uncle’s humble durian ice cream treat is now available in Kit Kat form. The durian flavour in the confectionery is very pronounced (though it tastes artificial to us), and the accompanying crushed ice cream cone bits provide a slight, pleasing crunch. Get this as a novelty treat for your durian-loving friend, but nothing beats the real durian deal.
It’s impossible to go wrong with this elegant pick: each Kit Kat white choc slab is infused with milky black tea and a smattering of dried rose petals. Delicately fragrant, floral, delish and not jelak even if you are scarfing down the whole slab yourself. This one is definitely nice.
More interesting flavours to consider
Kit Kat wafers loaded with coconut-infused cream.
Modelled after Singaporeans’ “quintessential favourite tze char dish”, this flavour combines milk chocolate with salted egg yolk, roasted cashew nuts, curry leaves and chilli flakes. Hmm.
Coconut cream powder-infused white choc and gula melaka layered over wafer biscuits.
Milk chocolate Kit Kats sprinkled with chopped roasted cashew nut bits and sea salt.
Chilli crab in chocolate? Why not? This one has chilli rempah-infused milk chocolate loaded with bits of toasted crab sticks and mantou buns.
It’s possible to fit the very Singaporean breakfast of kaya toast and kopi-o into Kit Kats, which the Chocolatory achieved by adding kopi-o-flavoured crumble and kaya-butter-sugar toast bits to milk chocolate Kit Kat wafers.
White confectionery Kit Kats with honey corn flakes, cone crumbs and dried cranberries.
At the time this story went live, the Kopitiam Breakfast, Singapore Chilli Crab, Salted Egg Yolk, Chendol and Cashew & Sea Salt flavours are sold out at online grocery store Redmart’s platform on e-tailer Lazada’s website, though the sold-out flavours are typically restocked within a few weeks.
