How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Not travelling anytime soon but die die need to stock up on alcohol for your long weekend parties? You can now shop online for wines, champagnes and sakes — get this — at tax- and duty-absorbed prices. Yes, even if you don’t have a boarding pass and are not jetting off for a holiday, you’ll still get to enjoy duty- and GST-absorbed prices from the comfort of your own phone, now that Changi Airport Group and DFS Group have launched a new online store, www.iShopChangiWines.com.

1 of 3 The lowdown

The site hawks over 140 products at prices sans tax and duties, but the range is limited to wine, bubbly and sake. In other words, you’ll still have to buy a plane ticket to and shop at the airport for beers, ciders and hard liquor at duty-free prices (but remember to check and shred those receipts).

The icing on the champagne-infused cake? Unlike shopping at the physical DFS store at the airport where travellers are limited to a maximum of two litres of wine, you can buy up to 30 litres (that’s about 40 bottles), even without travelling. Prices for wines start at $25; sparkling wines, $29; and sake from $30.

How do iShopChangiWines.com’s prices stack up to our good ol’ supermarkets and online grocery stores?

2 of 3 Is it really cheaper?

If you’re not picky about your wine and just grab whatever’s on offer at the supermarket, you may be better off sticking to, say, FairPrice and Redmart. A 750ml bottle of Matua Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (left) goes for $29 on iShopChangiWines.com, but is retailing for just $26.50 on Redmart and Fairprice. An Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot (750ml) is slightly cheaper on iShopChangiWines at $31.20, compared to Redmart’s $31.93. It’s not stocked at FairPrice.

  • 3 of 3 So why buy from here?

Wine aficionados who are allergic to, er, mainstream vinos will be delighted by the range of premium offerings and travel exclusives on the website. You definitely won’t find this limited edition Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut Lipstick (below) at FairPrice, but it’s going for $90 on the new site. Free delivery with purchases of $150 or more.
