INS Vikrant (pronounced: vikrɑːnt̪), also known as Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 (IAC-1),[15] is an aircraft carrier constructed by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Indian Navy. It is the first aircraft carrier to be built in India. It is named 'Vikrant' as a tribute to India's first aircraft carrier, Vikrant (R11). The name Vikrant means "courageous" in Sanskrit.[16] The motto of the ship is "Jayema Saṁ Yudhi Spr̥dhaḥ", means "I defeat those who fight against me".

26 MiG-29K[17] fighter jets, 4 Kamov Ka-31[18] helicopters, 2 HAL Dhruv NUH[19] utility helicopters and 4 MH-60R[20]multi-role helicopters [21] shall be flying from INS Vikrant air craft carrier, a 262 metres long, 62 metres wide, 59 metres height, top speed 28 knots, cruising speed 18 knots, endurance 7,500 nautical mile, 2,300 compartments, crew of 1700 people, dedicated hospital complex, specialized cabins for women officers, two football grounds sized flight decks, eight kilometres long corridors, its eight power generators can lighten up a city of 2 million people.[22]

Work on the ship's design began in 1999, and the keel was laid in February 2009. The carrier was floated out of its dry dock on 29 December 2011[23] and was launched on 12 August 2013.[24] The basin trials were completed in December 2020,[25] and the ship started sea trials in August 2021.[26]Flight trials of aircraft expected to be completed by mid-2023.[26][27] The total cost of the project was approximately ₹23,000 crore (US$2.9 billion) at the time of first sea trials.
