Cynthia Koh And The Muttons On Why The Proposed New COVID-19 Measures Do Not Discriminate Against People Who Can’t Get Vaccinated

Minister Lawrence Wong said on July 26 that any loosened restrictions will be extended only to fully vaccinated individuals as they are better protected against the virus.

Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

On July 26, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, who’s the co-chair of the multi-ministry COVID-19 task force, made a statement in Parliament announcing that Singapore might be able to “ease some of the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) measures” in mid-August. A welcome announcement for all F&B establishments and businesses, we’re sure.

However, there were some caveats. According to the minister, it will only be extended to fully vaccinated individuals who are much better protected against the effects of the virus.

“People who want to dine in at a restaurant or exercise in a gym will have to be fully vaccinated,” he said.

After his statement, a number of celebs took to their social media to laud the announcement, including Cynthia Koh, and Class 95 DJs The Muttons, Justin Ang and Vernon A.

1 of 3 Cynthia's definitely applauding this decision

Cynthia reposted an article quoting Lawrence Wong, adding a number of clapping gifs to her Instagram Story for effect last night. However, in the wee hours of the morning, she updated her Story once more, this time with a lengthy text post.

As it turns out, one of her followers had sent her a direct message, sharing that they felt that this new announcement from the government was “discriminating [against] those who can’t be vaccinated”.

And well, Cynthia had a lot to say about this.

2 of 3 And here's why

“If for whatever reason you can’t take the vaccine, that means your immune system is not at its best. Staying at home would definitely be better for you. Plus even if we are vaccinated, we still get the virus, just that our recovery will be faster.” she wrote, going on to add that Singapore needs to “get our economy going”.

“It’s very detrimental to keep everyone indoors all the time. Our local business owners are suffering. People need to rebuild their lives again,” she went on to explain.

“[I] hope you don’t take offence to being vaccinated or not. ‘Cos most of us can’t go on living this way. I too have to be swabbed every two weeks to make sure I’m COVID free so that I can be at work,” she said at the end of her post.

3 of 3 And The Muttons aren't mincing their words either

Similarly, The Muttons reposted an article on their IG Story, along with this strongly-worded caption, calling out those who choose not to get the vaccine despite being eligible for it.

They explained that this proposed new restriction is not meant to “discriminate against” those who are medically ineligible to be vaccinated.

“[Rather], they are the absolute reason why the rest of us eligible must be vaccinated — to protect them!! And to protect children under 12. Therefore if you’re eligible but choose not to vax, you’re simply, conclusively, a selfish prick (sic),” read their caption.
