Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

How many malls are there in China? Quite a bit it seems, judging from the number of ‘80s and ‘90s pop icons who’ve been engaged to perform in these mall atriums of late.

We’ve seen '80s Hongkong idol Max Mok as well as Hongkong actors Gallen Lo and Kenny Ho belting out tunes in these atriums, and now, it looks like its Taiwanese singer Chyi Chin’s turn.

1 of 4 Some netizens also took the opportunity to poke fun at the singer's pot belly

Like the others, Chyi Chin was seen performing in yet another sparsely-populated atrium recently, with videos of his performance making its way online.

But don’t start feeling sorry for the singer just yet. Chyi Chin’s reportedly raking in the big bucks from these gigs.

2 of 4 Quite a far cry from the huge concerts Chyi Chin's used to, but we don't think he minds at all

According to reports, the singer charges one million yuan (S$207,967) just to perform four songs at these atrium events.

And his rates are steadily increasing too.

Last year, Chyi Chin was reportedly earning 600,000 yuan (S$124,801) for a three-song performance.

Looks like the pandemic has not affected the singer’s earning power at all.

3 of 4 He doesn't even have to spend money on elaborate costumes 'cos a simple black tee will do

“He’s earning over a million yuan just to sing a couple of songs. That’s more than what I’ll earn from working my entire life,” one netizen wrote, echoing the sentiments of many.

Guess those netizens who laugh at “has-been” celebs performing at these mall atrium events are eating their words now.

4 of 4 The '80s pop idol sure is doing well
