Veteran Hongkong actress Elaine Jin has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 66-year-old uploaded a video on her YouTube channel on March 3 to share the news, which she found out about just after Chinese New Year.

Elaine was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019, and was open about her struggles with chemotherapy.

At that time, she was advised by doctors to undergo six rounds of chemotherapy after she had surgery to remove her appendix, lymph nodes, uterus, as well as her ovaries. Although the process caused most of her hair to fall out and put her in “excruciating pain”, Elaine was happy to announce that she had beat her cancer into remission.

Her recent diagnosis came as a total shock as Elaine hasn’t been feeling any discomfort as of late. She only consulted a doctor after realising that she had a lump in her left breast, and her worst fears were confirmed on February 16.

Elaine said, “I wanted to let everyone know about this news personally, rather than having you find out from [the media] (…) Discovering that I have [breast cancer] early could be a blessing. The lump has been removed and it’s still at stage one, which means that I don’t have to remove the entire breast.”

Choking back tears, she added that she will be undergoing electrotherapy as advised by her doctor.

The actress added, “I’ve been feeling very down and the diagnosis has left me extremely shaken. I was afraid that the cancer cells had spread, but thankfully the doctor assured me that this wasn’t the case. I want to remind everyone to go for regular checkups ‘cos early detection is really important in the fight against cancer.”
