Best YouTube Workouts To Try At Home During The Circuit Breaker
Free virtual classes galore on YouTube. Psst, there’s something for everyone in the family.
Yes, it is possible to keep fit during the circuit breaker without stepping out of the house. The good thing about sweat sessions at home? No need to figure out if the park's crowded (safe distancing above anything else, okay?). You don’t even have to book classes. Keeping up with that fitness regimen doesn’t get easier than this. Sure, there’s a plethora of fitness apps, which provide a more customised workout experience. But nothing beats the variety you get with the massive pool of YouTube tutorials out there. Want to rope in the entire household for a workout? No sweat. There are routines suitable for the whole fam, from kiddos to gramps, beginners to fitness fanatics.
Zero in on these YouTube workouts which are free and require little or no equipment.
SportSG has teamed up with instructors from popular local studios — think Yoga Movement, Haus Athletics, Uppercut Boxing, and more — to bring you a plethora of virtual classes to suit a wide range of fitness levels and preferences. These range from yoga and pilates to HIIT and boxing. Classes span from 45 minutes to an hour and are streamed live on YouTube and Facebook (schedules are out weekly) and later uploaded to the respective channels. Instructors teach against a background of the Singapore skyline, though somewhat kitschy, may make you feel like you’re outdoors in pre-coronavirus times.

Creator of ‘Pop Pilates’, Cassey Ho, has built an empire around her brand of an upbeat, contemporary take on Pilates. But it’s her infectious positive energy that’s earned her legions of fans — 5mil subscribers on YouTube, to be exact. Hers isn’t merely a YouTube channel — it’s a guide to the Blogilates lifestyle that shows you everything from toning workouts, fat-blasting routines and even clean-eating recipes. What most Singaporeans may find helpful, though, is her series of apartment-friendly workouts. The last thing you want is your neighbours to complain that you’re making too much noise prancing around during your workouts.

Here’s one for the kids. British fitness YouTuber Joe Wicks recently set a Guinness World Record for the most-watched YouTube livestream with his hugely popular ‘PE with Joe Wicks’ series. The 33-year-old began conducting live PE lessons on his channel, The Body Coach TV, when schools closed in the UK, as a way to motivate students to stay active. Now dubbed “the nation’s PE teacher”, Joe’s workouts are kid-friendly (duh) and doused with enthusiasm that will ensure the young ones stay entertained, energised and motivated to keep fit. If you’re lucky, he may even come to class in a Scooby Doo costume.

If you’re bummed out about not being able to hit 10,000 steps a day during the circuit breaker, these low-impact walking exercises might help. Depending on your fitness level, you could start with manageable one-mile walks, progress to a 12-minute jaunt at a fat burning pace or blast through a 20-minute brisk walk for those days you’ve had one cookie too many. Routines are kept short (most are under 20 minutes), and while walking isn’t as trendy as yoga or HIIT, these are great for beginners, both young and the young at heart.
