If you don’t already have a stash of cucumbers at home, you probably should nip to the supermarket and get some in time for this Friday (June 14). Because it’s World Cucumber Day and you get to pay for your after-work drink in — not cash or card — but cucumber. You read that right.

Pack a few cucumbers into your bag before you head out for after-work drinks on June 14, because from 7pm to 11pm, you’ll get to exchange a cucumber — any type of cucumber at that — for a Hendrick’s & Tonic at any of the participating bars. You already use the humble but mighty cucumber in your cooking and perhaps even your beauty regime (goodbye, puffy eyes!), so why not use it to pay for your drinks?

If you appreciate a good refreshing G&T, you’d know nothing complements Hendrick’s Gin quite like a slice of cucumber — after all, Hendrick’s Gin is infused with rose and cucumber during the distillation process. And the Scottish gin makers are celebrating their fave fruit (or vegetable? or fruit-bearing vegetable? who knows?) with a dose of wacky barter trade.

There are 42 bars islandwide participating in the third edition of Hendrick’s World Cucumber Day celebrations, up from last year’s 24. Redemptions are limited to 60 per bar, and one per customer. So you know what you’ve gotta do: Get to the bars early with those cucumbers.
