[Postponed] There’s A Yayoi Kusama Exhibition Coming To Singapore Soon. Get A Sneak Peek Here
Appreciate her masterpieces — and maybe don’t stand too close to fellow visitors while you’re there. #socialdistancing, okay?
Update, Mar 19, 2020: The exhibition has been postponed until further notice due to the current Covid-19 situation. New dates have yet to be announced.
The last time a Yayoi Kusama exhibition descended on our shores at National Gallery Singapore, there were queues comparable to those at the supermarket cashier during panic-buying sprees. People waited in line for hours just for a glimpse at the 91-year-old Japanese artist’s iconic polka dotted works and the crowd-pleasing infinity mirrored room installation. That was way back in 2017, which feels like a lifetime ago.
Here’s your second chance to marvel at her masterpieces. The acclaimed Japanese artist’s whimsical works — trademark polka dotted prints and pumpkins included — will soon be showcased in Singapore. This time, the spotlight will be on her earlier repertoire — 28 paintings and sculptures from 1951 to 1981 will be on display at Mucciaccia Gallery at Gillman Barracks. The exhibition begins Mar 27 and runs for three months.
Among the earliest pieces at the exhibition is this one from 1951.
Also included in the curated selection at the exhibition: Sculptures from celebrated artist's “Hi, Konnichiwa (Hello)!” series that made their grand debut in 2004 at the Mori Art Museum at a solo exhibition which attracted over half a million visitors.
From Mar 27, at Miucciaccia Gallery, 6 Lock Rd, #02-10, Gillman Barracks, S108934. Open Tue-Fri at 12-7pm, Sat at 11am-7pm, Sun 11am-6pm. Closed Mon. More info at https://mucciaccia.com/.
