Squid Game, the dystopian fantasy from South Korea, is currently the No.1 show in at least 90 countries, including the US. That’s a big deal. For the cast of the series, however, they didn’t know how massive the phenomenon is until they were invited to an American late-night talk show.

On Wednesday (Oct 6), four Squid Game actors — Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-Soo, Wi Ha-Joon and Jung Ho-Yeong — guested on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. When Jimmy asked Hae-Soo, “When did you realise the show became so big?” Hae-Soon, replied matter-of-factly in English, “Right now.”

Hae-Soon, who plays Player 218, continued in Korean, “I am so thankful that so many folks are watching this through so many media outlets. But I feel it even more at this very moment, it’s real, I feel it in my bones.”

Wi Ha-Joon, who plays cop Hwang Jun-Ho, added, I definitely think part of the appeal is the Korean children’s games. That can be very original, refreshing and also shocking at the same time to the global viewers.

I also feel like we did a good job expressing the true nature of raw greed and human nature that took place inside the games, which I believe resonates with a lot of the audiences.”

Elsewhere, Hae-Soon also shared that his son was born 10 minutes before Squid Game’s Korean debut at 4pm KST. “So he is my lucky charm and a bundle of blessing for me,” he said. “My friends and many people around me call him, Baby Squid.”

During the segment, Jimmy also showed off the bobblehead of Chantal the Doll, the creepy big figure featured in the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ game, he received from Netflix, with Ho-Yeon aka Player 067, explaining its origin (it’s a generic girl character in many Korean textbooks).
