New Mediacorp singing competition SPOP WAVE! officially kicked off earlier this week, with four of its eight mystery celeb contestants showing off their vocal chops as their faces remained hidden from full view.

However, there was something completely unrelated that caught the audience’s attention instead: the crumpled backdrop behind host Chen Ning and judges Kit Chan, Lee Si Song, and Lee Wei Song.

While we don’t think this is as major a blunder as, say, leaving a coffee cup in the frame of a fantasy epic or showing the lead actress in modern sneakers in a period drama, it was apparently enough to incite complaints from viewers.

“Please change the backdrop. The curtain looks cheap and [drags] the whole show down,” reads the most upvoted comment on the episode’s YouTube video. Others have also pointed out how “distracting” and crumpled it is.

The feedback is certainly being taken very seriously. An SPOP Wave! rep has since confirmed to 8days.sg that the curtain will be removed from Episode 3 onwards.

In more relevant (to the show) conversations, netizens were trying to figure out who the participants are ahead of their identity reveal two weeks from now (the remaining four contestants will also perform ‘masked’ in the upcoming ep).

Popular guesses include Jeremy Chan (one of the singers’ stories about how he had a cat who got really sick was quite a dead giveaway) and Chen Ning’s fellow YES 933 DJ Gao Mei Gui.SPOP WAVE! airs Tuesdays, 8pm on YES 933, meLISTEN, meWATCH, and Mediacorp Entertainment Youtube Channel.
