Quiz of the week

Taiwanese-American crooner Wang Leehom may be an award-winning Mandopop star who rakes in big bucks (even with his mere side gigs), but the 45-year-old is actually very frugal and doesn’t hoard all his wealth for himself.

Aside from having a NT$400mil (S$19.3mil) apartment to call home, Leehom, who was once rumoured to have an estimated net worth of NT$1bil (S$48.1mil), doesn’t exactly lead a lifestyle that reflects his multimillionaire status — remember the scratched up 13-year-old BMW he was ‘caught’ driving earlier this year?

Then there was the time his friend David Tao went on Chinese variety show Roast and announced to the whole world that Leehom’s closet is full of socks that have “lots of holes” in them.

Leehom, who was there, was then forced to take off one of his shoes, and sure enough, on there was a tattered sock that looked like it should have been thrown out months ago.

When probed about his thrifty ways during an interview, Leehom explained that he “has no material desires” and doesn’t like things to go to waste, so as long as an item of clothing can still be worn, he won’t throw it away (which we can clearly see from the state of his socks).

“I still wear the T-shirt that I liked in high school today,” he revealed. “About 95 per cent of the outfits I wear to public events are borrowed and returned the next day or after a week at most.”

While Leehom isn’t willing to spend a lot of money on himself, the father-of-three is way more generous when it comes to those in need, once declaring that he sets aside 90 per cent of his income for charity, and the other 10 per cent for making music.

He and his wife Lee Jinglei were also known to have started sponsoring 22 orphans after they tied the knot in 2013.

Leehom said that he will continue working hard so that they can have a better life, and expressed his interest in sponsoring even more kids in the future.
