Wang Leehom’s 2013 Weibo Post Clarifying That He’s Not Dating Li Yundi Goes Viral Again After The Pianist Got Arrested For Soliciting A Prostitute
We wonder if they are still friends.
Before he got married, there was a lot of speculation about Wang Leehom's sexuality — apparently he's too good-looking and too talented to be straight. And his close friendship with now disgraced Chinese pianist Li Yundi was widely gossiped about, with many people saying they were more than just friends.
The speculation intensified after Yundi did a cover of Leehom’s song Luo Ye Gui Gen, which many had assumed was the pianist's way of expressing his love for Leehom, though the song is about, well, one finding his roots.
Leehom was said to be so frustrated with the rumours that he took to Weibo to clarify things once and for all.
His post read, “I didn’t want to write this because it’s too ridiculous! But there were too many reports on this so I decided to clarify this myself so that nobody will be misled. I’m heterosexual, and Li Yundi likes women too. So what’s up with this ‘Hom Di’ pairing? Perhaps it’s a joke, or it’s entertainment news, but I hope that everyone knows the difference between the truth and trash talk. Sorry, I’m very straightforward and it’s very important to me that only the truth is reported about me.”
Yundi reposted the rant, adding, “We’re good brothers. I can confirm that both of us like women. I hope that people stop with the wild guesses and lies. Thank you for your concern and support.”
Fast forward to 2021, and Leehom is happily married to Lee Jinglei and has two daughters, six-year-old Jiali and four-year-old Jiana, and a two-year-old son, Jiayao.
On the other hand, Yundi is going through what's possibly the lowest point of his life after getting arrested for soliciting a prostitute last month.
After news of Yundi’s arrest was made public, netizens for some reason, revisited Leehom’s 2013 post where he denied being in a relationship with pianist. That post now has over 212K reposts. FYI: Leehom's usual posts get an average of 8.5K reposts.
Some of the comments on that 2013 post include, “The injustices faced by [your idols] being paired up with [other stars] will be addressed by reposting this Wang Leehom [statement]”, and “This is a safe way to pray for good luck without leaving the comfort of your house”.
Yes, the internet is a weird place, we know.
