13 Steps! Choose the next Esplanade installation!

Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

The Esplanade's Lower Concourse is undoubtedly the most popular of the art centre's art spaces. But I have to admit, even if it's been the site of some pretty amazing installations, the space is something I've always taken for granted, being more of a Jendela dude. So I'll try to redeem myself with a shout-out for an interesting project called 13 Steps. Basically, it's a chance to vote for the installation you would like to see realised at the Lower Concourse. It's in line with the centre's 10th anniversary celebrations and the chosen piece will be up in October. You have until April 15 to choose from among the four shortlisted proposals here or alternatively, you can drop by at the Durian where the models are up.

***

Sai Hua Kuan's Ling Ting A huge interactive horn that you can speak into and hear your voice amplified. A rather apt work considering the Concourse is a regular venue for music/sound performances.

***

Han Sai Por's The Black Rain An extension of her show at the Jendela last year -- a curtain of charcoal hangs from the ceiling, the floor space likewise textured with wood.

***

Chua Boon Kee's In The Affair Of Cats & Dogs, The Government's Involved And So Shall We That mouthful of a title takes its cue from the Prime Minister's speech at last year's National Day Rally (about ministers not having to do everything like culling cats and saving dogs). The space will be littered with casts of dogs and cats painted white and red, which are, apparently open for "public adoption" (er, for sale?)
