Art Singapore 2010! Scorecards! Playing it safe!
The RAT whipped out his scorecards once more for ART Singapore 2010 and… tried hard not to fall asleep. The best way to describe this year’s edition? Safe. Waaaaaaay safe. Not to take away from the homegrown art fair – celebrating it’s 10th anniversary by the way – but what’s with all the rehash from the galleries? Sure you’ve got Damien Hirsts (a lot of the same butterfly prints from The Souls series that’s on exhibit in the UK now -- so you can feel “up-to-date”?) but David Gerstein again? Richard Winkler again? People really love this stuff isit? Not taking a dig at Chinese contemporary art this time though. Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art is participating. But yeah, expect the same old same old. As for the vaunted UOB Painting of the Year booth showcasing the winners of the past decade, I would have praised the effort if not for the fact that it’s all crammed into one booth. Kudos to both fair organizers and the bank for the project but guys, I don’t know whose decision was it but couldn’t you have afforded a bit more space to let the works breathe? Isn’t it supposed to be one of the main highlights? Anyways, I’m going back to check out Tan Kai Syng’s A Rough Guide To The Meaning Of A Life 3.0. It’s one of the other highlights, a 50-minute video of the Singaporean artist’s long-running project. I’ve been looking forward to seeing it (the website can be confusing) but the video wasn’t working just now. As for the scorecards, well, it wasn’t quite as fun. Got a friend to randomly pick an artwork and then after looking at it for five seconds (again, the average amount of time the average museum goer looks as a painting) rate it from 5 (highest) to 1 (lowest). Thing is, in hindsight, I realised I was nicer than usual to some of them. I didn't see any work that was really screaming to be seen for its innovation. Heck, there weren't any ones that screamed "Look At Me" even. Well, actually there was one. But it's too sexually explicit to post here. Heh. Ah what the heck. I'm taking out 1 point out of all of them. (ART Singapore 2010 is on until Monday at Suntec. Details here.) ***
