The Mother Hen Next Door * A Tribute First staged at the Taipei Fringe Festival in 2010, it sees Hong Kong’s Hung Chit Wah and Taiwan’s Hung Pei Ching look at the Tiananmen Square uprising of 1989 in China and the 228 Massacre of 1947 in Taiwan, with The Spirits Play as a starting point. March 7 to 11, 7pm, Stamford Arts Centre, 155 Waterloo Street. (with 3pm weekend matinee shows and 9.30pm shows on Thur and Fri). Pay-as-you-want. Register at 6337 2525. In Mandarin. Lao Jiu: The Musical Last staged as a musical in 2005, one of KPK’s most popular works is back with a twist, it seems. Singer-songwriter Inch Chua is a cast member. July 12 to 29 at Drama Centre Theatre. Day I Met The Prince One of TTP’s popular school shows, KPK’s adaptation of The Little Prince, hits the stage. Aug 30 to Sept 9 at SOTA Studio Theatre. The Impending Storm – The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree Taiwanese director Fu Hong Zheng’s reinterpretation of said work. September 6 to 16, SOTA Studio Theatre. The Spirits Play Japan’s Makoto Sato and HK’s Danny Yung team up for a “stripped down” interpretation. October 25 to 28 at The Joyden Hall, Iluma. A Kuo Pao Kun Exhibition and International Conference An exhibition as well as a two-day academic conference on KPK’s life and works. September at the National Museum of Singapore.

*** And there are lots more. Tours at CCs and schools of The Coffin Is Too Big For The Hole, Day I Met The Prince, Calling The East Wind and a talk about KPK. Productions/exhibitions of/based on his works/life both here and overseas: Buds Youth Theatre does Coffin; Peter Sau’s Tell Me When To Laugh and When To Cry; The Substation and Objectifs’ joint event where the art centre commemorates its founder (as part of the annual SeptFest); Paper Monkey Theatre’s Mama Looking For Her Cat; NUS Indian Dance’s Vriksha (a dance interpretation of The Silly…); The Necessary Stage’s October; and a yet-to-be-titled final version of TheatreWorks’ previous performance of The Red Ballerina (on Madam Goh Lay Kuan). Folks in London, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Hyderabad will also get to watch productions of some of these works courtesy of overseas companies.
