SHOUT OUT # 1

After Goodman Arts Centre, there's a second new arts space that the National Arts Council has opened up for application. And it’s in town! The Aliwal Arts Centre is located at, well, Aliwal Street in Kampong Glam, parallel to Jalan Sultan. Formerly where Chong Cheng School was, it will house 31 tenanted art spaces, eight shared facilities, two open courtyards and four commercial spaces (for creative businesses and F&B outlets—hopefully cheaper ones, but seeing as you’ve got awesome food places surrounding it, no issues for us if it’s otherwise.) Of the 31 spaces, eight are for multi-purpose studios, six for music/dance purposes, and the remaining 17 spaces are for a “new shared office scheme” that provides office and meeting room furniture. Joint tenancy is encouraged. Anyways, application opened last Tuesday and the deadline is on August 17. Interested applicatins can check out the place on July 10 and 12, 4pm. Just register at nac_aliwal [at] nac.gov.sg (nac_aliwal[at]nac[dot]gov[dot]sg) three working days before the dates. For more details go here.

SHOUT OUT # 2

Speaking of art spaces, Goodman Arts Centre’s holding its first visual talkback! event this Sunday afternoon. What’s it about? Basically, you’ve got a bunch of emerging and young artists talking shop, their artistic practice, some issues that concern the local art scene, in an informal, breezy way. Unless, of course things get heated. Hehe. Yours truly and GAC’s Evan Hwong will be moderating the meet that’ll include GAC tenants Justin Lee, Robert Zhao Renhui and Yang Jie, as well as young artists Clement Liang, Daryl Goh, Eunice Lim, Jane Koh, Pang+Kanako, and Quek Jia Liang. It’ll be held this Sunday, July 8, from 2pm to 4.30pm at the GAC Multi-Purpose Room 1, Block B #01-07. Free admission. For more details, just drop the folks a line at gac [at] toph.com.sg (gac[at]toph[dot]com[dot]sg) or 6342 5790. Hopefully it kickstarts a nice regular programme at GAC.

*** SHOUT OUT # 3 Finally, this year’s 24-Hour Playwriting Competition will be held on July 21/22 and it’ll be in… Gardens By The Bay. Yep, organisers TheatreWorks are hoping that those surreal Supertrees will provide as much inspiration as the yachts and Pulau Ubin did for previous editions. Sci-fi play, anyone? Or, you know, some Treebeard-ish like characters. Anyways, I took my time posting this, so you’d better hurry because there are only 70 slots and the deadline for registration is this Saturday, July 7. You’ve got two categories: Youth (15 to 18 years old) and Open (19 years old and above). Registration fee is S$30 and S$40, respectively. Prizes range from S$100 to S$700. Go here to download the registration form.
