NHB’s community service for 2012!

Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

The National Heritage Board revealed its rough plans for the year earlier today and it looks like there’s going to be a lot of grassroots, community and history-related stuff going on in and around the museums. There’s talk of recording oral history, looking at void decks and wet markets, (re)launching heritage trails at Jalan Besar and Kampong Glam. There are plans to turn one of the National Museum’s galleries into a Community Gallery where cultural and ethnic groups or clan associations can hold exhibitions. Read on for some of the events to expect this year. *** In the Mood for Cheongsam: Modernity and Singapore Women from the 1920s to 2000s --  An exhibition that’ll featuring cheongsam worn by the wives of Singapore’s political leaders as well as those on loan from the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Film Archives. (March to June at NMS) 1945 – 1965: Road To Nationhood -- An exhibition that looks at the country’s post-war period, in collaboration with the National Archives. (Date TBC at NMS) A Life of Practice – Kuo Pao Kun -- An exhibition marking the late KPK’s 10th death anniversary (which means there will be other events outside of this show, methinks) (September to December at NMS) Lee Wen: Lucid Dreams in the Reverie of the Real -- Cultural Medallion recipient and Mr Yellow Man himself will have a show recreating key works in his career as well as recent ones. A must go show. (April to June at SAM) President’s Young Talents -- Aka Singapore’s Next Top Artist? Kidding. It’s back! (December to April 2013 at SAM) Regarding Emily-- An exhibition surrounding the play Emily of Emerald Hill in a most appropriate venue, tied of course to the history of Peranakan theatre. (June to February 2013 at Peranakan Museum) 70th Anniversary of the Battle for Singapore, 1941-1942 -- A big NHB-wide initiative marking that historical moment, which includes trails, tours and a ceremony at Kranji War Cemetery. (January to February at various venues) The Islamic Arts of Southeast Asia -- There’s a section in ACM that deals with this but I’m assuming this is something bigger. (June to October at ACM) The White Wedding Dress: 200 Years of Wedding Fashions from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London -- To balance the cheongsam show, you’ve got this one. Mind you, it’s not just about wedding dresses but WHITE wedding dresses. Including those designed by Vera Wang, Vivienne Westwood and Christian Lacroix, and worn by Dita Von Teese and Gwen Stefani. (Dita Von Teese?!) (August to October at NMS) Southeast Asian Film Festival 2012 -- With all the question marks surrounding SIFF, regional cinema addicts can look forward to this one, featuring 18 works by Southeast Asian film-makers. (March at SAM at 8Q) Jia Aili Solo -- An exhibit of paper works and installations by the young Chinese painter. (July to September at SAM)  (For the full release, go here.)
