A sack of rice! A fridge of beers! Umberto Eco!
Two exhibitions opened on Monday. One at NAFA. One at Post Museum by ex-NAFA students. Including one who’s also a curator at NAFA who helped set up the exhibition at NAFA that was not by NAFA students. Connections, connections. The one at NAFA was Remade, Relived: Modern Art in Singapore, a group show by, you guessed it, the Modern Art Society Singapore. They of the esteemed CM and YAA folks. Nothing spectacular, although I’ve admired works by some of them, like Hong Sek Chern and the late Chua Ek Kay. I’ve fond memories interviewing Mr Chua and Sarkasi Said together during the 2007 Singapore Art Show. He had said something that was so memorable that... I've forgotten it. But it was about how he agonised over every single paintbrush stroke. Okay, he didn't exactly say he "agonised" but it's a close approximation. He was soft spoken. Anyway, like I said, nothing spectacular. But one work stood out, the only 3D work on display. A sack of rice.
