STATE OF THE ARTS (Aug 29 to Sep 4) The outdoor installation exhibition Night Lights 2011 lit up the Bras Basah area for the second salvo of this year’s Night Festival, while The Substation began its month-long birthday celebrations with its annual Sept Fest line-up. Budding choreographers were unearthed at this year’s Sprouts dance showcase, as a new group of performance artists performed for the NOW! event. Singaporeans turned into poets for a day at the interactive community event Singapore, A Giant Poem. Two plays opened at the same time and went political: Chong Tze Chien’s To Whom It May Concern  and the much awaited new work by Tan Tarn How, Fear Of Writing - his first play in a decade, which was scathing, fearless and sold out. Finally, some sombre news as pioneering conductor and Cultural Medallion recipient Paul Abisheganaden died at age 97.
