July 16 to 22 Arts philanthropy was in the spotlight as the National Arts Council presented its 2012 Patron Of The Arts and Arts Supporter Awards. More than 270 people and organisations collectively contributed S$31.2 million in 2011, with first-time donor Marina Bay Sands being one of those conferred with the highest title, Distinguised Patron Of The Arts. Incidentally, renowned architect William Lim celebrated his 80th birthday last week in the most magnanimous way possible: donating to five arts organizations and two individual artists. Meanwhile, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra appointed a resident composer; the Asian Civilisations Museum opened two exhibitions on Islamic art and artefacts; this year’s Heritage Festival kicked off; and the Esplanade unveiled its 10th anniversary programme in October — a four-day all-Singapore celebration of the arts.
