State of the Arts! November 2011! Week 2!
STATE OF THE ARTS (Nov 7 to 13)
Last week, elephants came out of the woodwork as the Elephant Parade show presented 160 pachyderm sculptures designed by various artists. (UPDATE: One of the works, over at Asian Civilisations Museum, has been vandalised) One elephant, however, can be found inside the Singapore Art Museum as part of a video installation under the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize finalists show — which also features lone Singapore finalist Michael Lee. The sixth Xposition ‘O’, the biennial contemporary dance festival organised by Odyssey Dance Theatre, as well as The Necessary Stage’s restaging of their 2008 hit play Gemuk Girls, also kicked off. But the festive atmosphere was dampened by news regarding arts enclave Old School@Mount Sophia. Despite a campaign to conserve the area — which is home to a number of galleries and arts and design offices — an announcement was made that redevelopment plans will continue after the lease ends next year.
