Sticker Lady! Town hall meeting! Some links!
Howdy, loyal reader(s). As I was away for a few days, I guess you’re more up to date about recent developments regarding the My Grandfather Road incident involving skl0 (for now, I shall keep referring to the 25-year-old graffiti/street artist by her moniker as a sign of respect for her practice—although Sticker Lady also sounds damn cool).
Anyways, a heads up. We’ve just found out that there will be a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 7pm to 10pm, at White House, Emily Hill, 11 Upper Wilkie Road. Members of the arts community are invited to come on down to discuss and take stock of the issues surrounding skl0’s arrest, street art, vandalism, etc.
The pow wow’s being organised by Intercultural Theatre Institute’s T. Sasitharan and The Necessary Stage’s Alvin Tan, with assistance from Six Degrees.
In the meantime, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling some links regarding the issue.
Here’s a news story that came out in TODAY about the incident stirring a debate about art. (UPDATE: The latest commentary on the Vandalism Act.)
A bunch of letters published in the paper's Voices section here, here, here, and here.
Here's the Guardian story, while Wall Street Journal jumps in here and here. This one's a recording of a BBC World Service radio ep.
If you've missed out on Arts NMP Janice Koh's thoughts, it's here, while musician Inch Chua also had her opinions. SOTA student Ruby Thiagarajan posted a FB note here.
Two articles definitely worth checking out: Ho Rui An's thoughts here and Ng Yi-Sheng's article here.
I'm actually doing a more primitive way of collating the stuff. Here's Peter Schoppert's Storify version.
More links in my earlier post, including images of skl0's work here. If I've missed out on any other interesting and important links, let me know.
I'm also adding this interesting list of 50 Biggest Street Art Arrests for some context. Thanks to Mel Lee for the link.
(Meanwhile, in case you were completely caught up in the Sticker Lady buzz, there was also this little bit of news that came out regarding the Singapore Arts Festival.)
