The Substation salutes Alexis Tioseco!

Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Wrote a little something about the late Alexis Tioseco for tomorrow's Weekend Today. He was a young and excellent film critic from the Philippines who had a lot of friends and admirers in Singapore's film community.   He was murdered along with his Slovenian girlfriend, fellow film critic Nika Bohinc, last week in their house in Manila by robbers. Alexis was a friend of mine -- through my brother -- and I also had the pleasure of meeting Nika when the two of them visited Singapore for last year's Asian Film Symposium. Alexis curated the S-Express Philippines segment. I remember raving to Nika about her fellow Slovenian choreographer Edward Clug's The Architecture of Silence and Radio and Juliet, which had been shown at last year's Singapore Arts Festival. I told her how impressed I was at her country's seemingly progressive arts scene -- until she gave me a crash course on the rocky state of her country's film scene. Meanwhile, Alexis will always be, for me, one of the main reasons why my brother Raya and I always got into fights on using the computer (when we were all younger and I was still working back in the Philippines). You see, they were always chatting away on YM. Every single night. He had always been an impressionable "kid" to me (even though he's only two years younger, he kept calling me Mister Martin -- the way he fondly calls practically everyone "Mister") until I first saw him speak at the 2007 Asian Film Symposium. And he just blew me away with his knowledge and passion. He was a film critic with heart. Alexis and Nika will be missed.  So much so that The Substation will be holding a tribute on Sept 21, 4-6pm.  If you want to share your personal photos, videos or just say a few words, contact Low Beng Kheng(bengkheng [at] substation.org (bengkheng[at]substation[dot]org)). A passionate supporter of the regional independent film scene, Alexis had a website which is a must visit for anyone into Southeast Asian cinema. He supposed to update it real soon. Go visit it.
