Quiz of the week

How well do you know the news? Test your knowledge.

Even if you have been blessed with luscious Rapunzel-like locks, there are many factors that can leave your hair damaged over time.

Some of the biggest culprits behind dry and frizzy hair are regular and indiscriminate perming, colouring and bleaching using low-quality products. Add poor haircare maintenance into the equation and the result is damaged and dull hair.

According to Ms Rachel Wee, operations manager at Jean Yip Group, hair is not a living tissue with regenerative abilities, and using subpar hair treatments or products may not help repair hair strands.

The good news is, there is hope for those with dry and unruly hair.

Specially formulated hair treatments, such as Jean Yip Hairdressing’s latest innovation, the Super Gloss Hair Treatment, can improve hair texture as well as prevent further damage, Ms Wee said.

Here, Ms Wee shares more about the factors causing lacklustre hair and debunks misconceptions about keratin hair treatments.

What causes dry and damaged hair?

Dry hair happens when hair does not receive or retain enough moisture, causing it to lose its healthy sheen.

Along with ageing, environmental factors and UV damage, frequent chemical treatments such as perming and colouring, as well as excessive heat from styling tools can rob your hair of moisture, leaving it brittle, broken and unmanageable.

Avid swimmers who frequently swim in chlorinated swimming pools or in the sea are also at risk of dry and damaged hair.

Additionally, harsh chemicals in low-quality home care products can strip off natural oils, cuticles and keratin from your locks.

Why does dry hair become frizzy?

Lack of moisture in your hair strands causes it to seek moisture from the surrounding air, which is why humid environments can worsen hair frizz.

Besides this, washing hair with hotter-than-necessary water, scrunching up wet hair with a towel right after a shower, over-brushing as well as constant heat from hair styling tools are all possible contributors to frizz. Not using the right conditioner can lead to split ends, damaging hair further.

Why can’t conventional treatments and products fix damaged hair?

As hair is not a living tissue, it cannot repair itself. Relying only on conventional hair treatments and products will not help to repair or revive hair strands if you have undergone excessive chemical hair treatments. Conventional hair products may have insufficient or missing ingredients needed for proper hair rejuvenation.

How does Jean Yip’s Super Gloss Hair Treatment restore shiny locks?

Before and after the Super Gloss Ultra Violet Keratin Smoothing Treatment.

Created by our chemists and the creative salon team, the Super Gloss Hair Treatment aims to restore and fill in the “gaps” in damaged hair strands with collagen, protein and keratin.

The treatment is targeted at those with dry, damaged, frizzy and bleached hair. However, it is suitable for all hair types, and anyone can benefit from the treatment, whether she has coloured, chemically treated or au naturel hair.

The Super Gloss series, which consists of keratin products and treatments, is available in various colour options and offers colour enhancement benefits. The treatment can also be used as a colour corrector for brassy, yellow hair.

The Super Gloss series is the first treatment in the market where you can infuse pigment colour toner and colour corrector, which allows you to get the best of both worlds: Your desired hair colour and glossy, silky locks.

What are the ingredients in the Super Gloss Hair Treatment?

The Super Gloss Hair Treatment contains ingredients such as nano keratin, argan oil, phytantriol and panthenol.

Nano keratin is a unique biomimetic technology that breaks down keratin to a micro molecular size, enabling it to penetrate into the hair shaft to create smooth hair.

Argan oil is often dubbed “liquid gold” for its amazing qualities. It contains considerable amounts of beneficial nutrients, including Vitamin E and fatty acids. Phytantriol strengthens damaged hair while panthenol improves hair elasticity and moisture retention.\

What are some misconceptions about keratin hair treatments?

Keratin smoothing treatments are often thought to contain formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen, to keep hair straight and smooth for long periods of time. Some companies have begun marketing "formaldehyde-free" keratin treatments, replacing the ingredient with other chemicals like methylene glycol, which may be equally bad for health.

However, keratin smoothing treatments are safe if care is taken to use the right chemicals from the right sources in the correct amounts. At Jean Yip, we ensure our products are for cosmetic-grade use and come from credible sources. Safety is assured when the correct technique and dosage are used.

How soon can I see effects after the Super Gloss Hair Treatment?

After one session, you will notice tamed tresses that are naturally straight, gleaming, more manageable and less brittle.

How long do the effects last?

The effects can last up to two months with proper care and consistent usage of sulphate-free shampoos. Those with damaged hair can undergo the treatment regularly every two to three months.
