Checklist: Airline uniform revamp
SINGAPORE — C’mon, don’t deny it. You secretly judge an airline based on the uniforms of its crew. Travel search site Skyscanner surveyed over 1,200 travellers in February this year to uncover which airline’s cabin crew was seen as the most stylish. The winners for Europe and the Asia-Pacific respectively were Russia’s Aerofloat and China Eastern. Feel free to disagree as the eternal quest to outfit cabin crews continues with three new efforts recently. SERENE LIM

1. Designer threads for ANA
All Nippon Airways has just appointed New York-based Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung to update the uniforms of all 10,000 of its cabin and ground crew. ANA said that these new uniforms have been commissioned to mark the airline’s 60th anniversary. Gurung has revealed that the uniforms will be influenced by his “personal passion for luxury and glamour” and he would inject a fresh and modern perspective to them. Can’t wait? They’ll be unveiled next year.
2. Geek chic for Air Canada rouge
Billing itself as a leisure airline for “stylish affordable travel”, Air Canada rouge’s crew uniforms are decidedly youthful with fedora hats, burgundy vests and jackets as well as ties and scarfs in a retro-print. The jury is still out on this as some have called the uniforms “hipster”, while others have derided them as too Glee-like. You be the judge as the low-cost carrier launches July 1.
3. Punk royalty for Virgin Atlantic
You can trust Richard Branson’s airline to make uniforms edgy with the grand dame of punk Dame Vivienne Westwood coming on board. Keeping to the signature red shade, the designer spilled that the silhouette for the female uniform will be extremely feminine to fit all shapes and sizes, while the men’s uniform will sport “a very traditional British look” with its Savile Row inspired three-piece suit.
