2014 in review: Arts movers and shakers say goodbye, hello

HELLO…
SUSIE LINGHAM. The visual artist and educator was technically appointed director of the Singapore Art Museum last year, but it was this year when she put her stamp on the museum, post-Singapore Biennale, with a series of thematic exhibitions.
SEAN TOBIN. After Haresh Sharma and Alvin Tan announced they would be stepping down as longtime co-artistic directors of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, the theatre-maker and educator stepped up and debuts his first edition next month. Joining him was Jezamine Tan who takes over from Melissa Lim as festival manager.
CHARLES LIM & SHABBIR HUSSAIN MUSTAFA. After a break from the Venice Biennale, Singapore announced it was taking part again next year, with artist Lim and curator Mustafa flying the flag.
ONG KENG SEN & LEE CHOR LIN. They were briefly involved in a very public spat, but the two head honchos of the Singapore International Festival of Arts, artistic director Ong and Arts Festival Ltd chief executive Lee, eventually presented the revived, new-look annual festival without a hiccup .
YUNI HADI & ZHANG WENJIE. The former festival directors of the Singapore International Film Festival had another go helming this year’s 25th edition with Zhang as fest director and Yuni as executive director.
GOODBYE…
PAUL TAN. After four successful years helming the Singapore Writers Festival, he passes the baton to fellow poet Yeow Kai Chai to concentrate on his role as deputy chief executive of National Arts Council, replacing Yvonne Tham who moved to the Esplanade as assistant chief executive.
LOW KEE HONG. Singapore’s loss is Hong Kong’s gain. The former general manager of the Singapore Arts Festival joined arts hub West Kowloon Cultural District as head of artistic development for theatre.
KHAIRUDDIN HORI. Singapore’s loss is Paris’ gain as the artist and former SAM and NHB curator joined contemporary art centre Palais de Tokyo as its deputy programming director.
JANICE KOH. The stage and television actress stepped down after a successful stint as Nominated Member of Parliament.
NOOR EFFENDY IBRAHIM. The theatre and visual artist announced he will be wrapping up up his five-year tenure as artistic director of The Substation next month to concentrate on his artistic practice .
SPELL#7. One of Singapore’s most innovative theatre groups closes shop after husband-and-wife founders Paul Rae and Kaylene Tan announced they will be moving to Melbourne.
ALAN OEI. The artist ended his stint as the artistic director of Sculpture Square, which vacated its Middle Road premises. He’s still keeping busy with the popular Open House art tour series.
