SINGAPORE — Auction house Christie’s will be putting the spotlight on Singapore art next month as part of its Hong Kong Autumn 2015 Auction Week.

Convergences: A Special Sale Of Singapore Art, which will be held on Nov 29, marks the first time an international auction house has dedicated an individual sale to Singapore art, a category that has been increasingly attracting international collectors in recent years, it said in a statement released today (Oct 21).

The one-off sale will showcase the range and quality of artworks to new and discerning collectors alike, said Wang Zineng, head of sale for South-east Asian art. “A diverse selection of iconic works will be presented, many of which illustrate key episodes in the history of Singapore art. Through the sale, we are also aiming to highlight the role played by Singaporean artists within the larger realm of Asian modern and contemporary art.”

The top lot of the sale will be Cheong Soo Pieng’s Balinese Dance, which was created during the years following the famous 1952 trip to Bali by Cheong and his fellow Nanyang painters. It is one of the artist’s earliest oil paintings and one of the largest he had done in the early 1950s.

The sale, which will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, will also feature one of the most comprehensive collections of works by Chen Wen Hsi. Among the eight works by the artist on offer is Sea Palace, which was created between the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Also among the artists making their auction debut is emerging contemporary painter Ruben Pang, whose painting Light The Caretaker will go under the hammer. Important works by Sun Yee, one of the few female artists from the Singapore modernist movement will also be on offer.Other artists featured are Chua Ek Kay, Tan Oe Pang and Tan Swie Hian.

A selection of highlights from the sale will be exhibited in Singapore at ArtSpace@Helutrans, 39 Keppel Road, from Nov 6 to 8.
