State of the Arts: Feb 11 to 17

SINGAPORE — Even the arts scene was in Chinese New Year mode for much of last week, only picking up with a couple of festivals: Esplanade’s Huayi Festival and the inaugural Manga Festival In Singapore. This, however, was bookended by both good and bad news. The week started with animator Nickson Fong becoming the first Singaporean to win an Oscar (even as guitarist Arun Shenoy, the first Singaporean nominated for a Grammy, missed out on his bid). Then, over the weekend, the theatre community awoke to the passing of influential educator and director Christina Sergeant at the age of 57 due to health reasons. MAYO MARTIN
