State Of The Arts: Feb 25 to March 3

Another whirlwind week in the scene. The theatre community saw the Singapore Drama Educators Association hold a memorial to the late theatre pioneer Christina Sergeant and a forum theatre piece by Hum Theatre on Indian integration. Folks in film were heartened by news that Sex.Violence.Family Values finally got its release date (March 14) and the winners of the 4th Singapore Short Film Awards 2013 were announced, including Ang Gek Geck Geck’s Broken Crayon for Best Fiction Film and Anthony Chen (Karang Guni) for Best Director. Street dance enthusiasts, meanwhile, had the finals of the first TODAY Movement Dance Championships. Visual arts saw the opening of Jalan Bahar Clay Studios’ ceramic gallery, Lasalle College Of The Arts’ Media Lab students doing presentations at ArtScience Museum as part of an ongoing new series, the sending off of Peranakan Museum artefacts to Korea for an exhibition, and the launch of Woon Tai Ho’s book Riot Green, which is set in the art world. And speaking of books, the literary community was shocked by recent news of a huge drop in students taking Full Literature for the O-Levels. Meanwhile, amid all the Budget 2013 announcements was the creation of a new Cultural Donation Matching Fund that is set to match, dollar-for-dollar, donations to arts and culture. MAYO MARTIN
