SINGAPORE — Copies of artist-illustrator Sonny Liew’s controversial book The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye sold out last weekend, with his publisher Epigram Books announcing that a second print run will be out this month. In related news, the National Arts Council elaborated on its decision to revoke the publishing grant it had given for the book, saying that its retelling of Singapore’s history “potentially undermines the authority and legitimacy of the Government”. Long-running theatre and dance review website The Flying Inkpot announced its closure after 19 years. Meanwhile, the SEA Games kicked off with an opening ceremony directed by Singaporean theatremaker Beatrice Chia-Richmond and written by playwright Haresh Sharma; the Esplanade’s quirky Flipside festival opened; artists from NAC’s Noise Singapore, among others, took part in the ongoing DBS Marina Regatta watersports festival; and the three-day Singapore Open Media Art Festival and a caricature festival organised by the Singapore chapter of the International Society of Caricature Artists took place. The Media Development Authority of Singapore announced the recipients of this year’s New Talent Feature Grant for film-makers. Royston Tan’s Singapore Tourism Board-commissioned short film garnered three million hits on Chinese video-sharing platform Youku. Singapura: The Musical will also wrap up its run this weekend.
