State of the Arts: May 9 to 16
SINGAPORE — The visual arts scene continued to shift. Following news of the closure of six galleries at Gillman Barracks at the end of the month, art gallery Art Plural also announced the closure of its space at Armenian Street while organisers of the Singapore Art Fair, which debuted last year, said they will be postponing this year’s edition. Meanwhile, over at Venice Biennale, one of the Special Mention award recipients was pioneering American video and performance artist Joan Jonas. And there’s a slight Singapore connection, too: The co-curator for her winning installation was Ute Meta Bauer, director of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore. Back home, the Esplanade wrapped up its special Studios season featuring 50 plays from the Singapore theatre canon last Sunday. MAYO MARTIN
