State of the Arts: Oct 11 to 18

SINGAPORE — A big week for the arts: Theatre practitioner Alvin Tan, sculptor Chong Fah Cheong and poet KTM Iqbal received the Cultural Medallion while five young artists also received the Young Artist Award. The National Arts Council also launched a new arts magazine, The A List, which will be helmed by playwright and media veteran Michael Chiang. It was announced that artist-curator Khairuddin Hori has been appointed deputy programming director at contemporary art centre Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Also announced this week were the winners of this year’s 24-Hour Playwriting Competition by TheatreWorks and the South East Community Development Council, and the shortlisted works for the Singapore Literature Prize 2014’s Tamil and English Non-Fiction categories. Archifest 2014 wrapped up while Malay CultureFest kicked off. MAYO MARTIN
