State of the Arts: Sept 2 to 8

SINGAPORE — Not only did Ilo Ilo pull in an impressive S$210,000 on opening weekend, it was also chosen as Singapore’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at next year’s Oscars. Elsewhere, Goodman Arts Centre held its open house; Gillman Barracks celebrated its first year (and welcomed its latest tenant, Yeo Workshop); TheatreWorks finally launched its 25th anniversary book, From Identity To Mondialisation: TheatreWorks 25; and the Asian Civilisations Museum conducted tours in Malay to mark Malay Language Month. More details regarding the Affordable Art Fair Singapore and Singapore Writers Festival, both of which open in November, were revealed. The former will have a new wall featuring works under S$1,000 and opened its Young Talent Programme winners exhibition at ION Art Gallery. The latter unveiled a line-up that included The Reluctant Fundamentalist author Mohsin Hamid and Dragonlance creators Tracy and Laura Hickman. More than 60 books from Singapore authors will also be launched.
