5 things to check out at National Gallery opening celebrations
SINGAPORE — From Nov 24 to Dec 6, the new National Gallery Singapore is opening its doors to the public, with a range of activities. After this period, Singaporeans and permanent residents will continue to enjoy free admission to the gallery while foreigners pay S$20 each for entry. Here are some of the highlights of the two-week celebrations to mark the gallery’s opening:

SINGAPORE — From Nov 24 to Dec 6, the new National Gallery Singapore is opening its doors to the public, with a range of activities. After this period, Singaporeans and permanent residents will continue to enjoy free admission to the gallery while foreigners pay S$20 each for entry. Here are some of the highlights of the two-week celebrations to mark the gallery’s opening:
1. SIAPA NAMA KAMU? / BETWEEN DECLARATIONS AND DREAMS. Visitors can check out the museum’s first two permanent exhibitions — at the DBS Singapore Gallery and UOB Southeast Asia Gallery, respectively. Opening hours during the opening celebrations is from 10am to 7pm (Mon to Thur) and 10am to 11pm (Fri to Sun).
2. ART CARNIVAL. The celebrations extends outdoors with this family-friend carnival featuring everything from art installations to workshops in themed tents inspired by the works of different artists. Nov 27 to 29, 5pm to midnight, The Padang.
3. SHARE THE HOPE FACADE SHOW. This 10-minute light-and-sound spectacle splashed against the facade of the new museum will feature the most iconic artworks of the national collection in, literally, a big way. Nov 27 to 29, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm, Museum Facade.
4. NATIONAL LANGUAGE CLASS. A short version of theatre group Spell#7’s stage adaptation of Cultural Medallion recipient Chua Mia Tee’s iconic painting of the same name, where audiences of up to eight people at a time can recreate the painting by having their own Malay language lesson. Nov 27 to 29, Dec 4 to 6, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm, and Nov 30 to Dec 3, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, at the City Hall Wing, Level 2, Singapore Courtyard.
5. IN THE NAME OF RED. Dance group The Arts Fission has created a 10-minute site-specific performance on the museum’s grand staircase, inspired by the colour red seen in many of the museum’s paintings. Dec 4 to 6, 9pm, Padang Atrium.
During the celebrations, complimentary entry into the National Gallery Singapore is by tickets only. These can be booked online from Nov 5, 10am onwards, at http://tickets.nationalgallery.sg. There will be a maximum of five tickets allowed at a time for each booking. Opening hours is from 10am to 7pm (Mon to Thur) and 10am to 11pm (Fri, Sat and Sun). The outdoor weekend art carnival from Nov 27 to 29 will be open from 5pm till midnight.
