SINGAPORE - Blue Skies is a debut album by Joseph Vincent, who was popular after making various covers on YouTube, and started gaining more popularity after he performed at The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In Blue Skies though, it’s the pop/acoustic tracks that get more play, even though I thought the R&B and soul vibes seem to suit his voice better.

The way Vincent’s soothing voice comes across on the title song - as he croons “Blue skies, brown eyes, baby you’re my perfect day” - is enough to make any girl melt (and any girl who listens to this track is bound to become a fan). Bumble Bee, features the same romantic and cheesy (but definitely catchy) lyrics also evokes the same emotion, and is sure to steal the hearts of many.

But what really impressed me was when Vincent showed off his vibrato and gritty vocals in tracks that featured more of his R&B side. Not surprisingly, it worked.

Tracks like Set You Free should’ve been up front on the album. Vincent really shows off his vocal capabilities in this track that begins with a little R&B and breaks into a pop rock tempo towards the end, perfectly suiting the unique flavour of his voice. Other tracks like Heart Break Girl may remind of Robin Thicke’s music style.

Overall, Blue Skies is a good experimental debut album for the Filipino American singer. Now if he would start experimenting with R&B and soul sometime soon.
