SINGAPORE — Thirteen years ago, Singapore’s pop princess Stefanie Sun included her rendition of Chyi Yu’s timeless classic Olive Tree in her covers album Start. Come Nov 14, fans may get to hear the two singers perform that song as a duet.
Chyi Yu and Sun are set to take the stage alongside famed Taiwanese singer-songwriters Jonathan Lee and Chyi Chin (he is Chyi Yu’s brother) in a special charity concert for Ren Ci Hospital. All four singers will perform pro bono for Ren Ci’s first public charity concert in 15 years. Called Love And Remembrance Charity Concert, the show aims to raise S$1.7 million through sponsorships, donations and ticket sales to support patient care at the new Ren Ci Nursing Home in Bukit Batok Street 52.
Speaking at a press conference, Chyi Yu, who performed at a sold-out concert in Marina Bay Sands last year, thanked her fans in Singapore for their support. “Because of their unwavering support, I am able to hold this charity concert,” she said, adding that she plans to perform some of her greatest hits as well as classics by other music icons at the show. “But I cannot pull this off alone. This is why I invited my brother Chyi Chin, as well as my friend Jonathan Lee, to join me at the concert.
“Then, I thought, I should invite a Singaporean singer, since the concert is for a hospital in Singapore. I’ve never met Stefanie Sun in person and I wasn’t sure if she would accept my invitation. But she agreed to join us immediately,” she said.
“With such a strong line-up, I feel quite safe!”
Chyi Yu said she plans to perform duets with Lee and Chyi Chin. But when asked if she might sing Olive Tree with Sun, she remained coy.
“There is a very big possibility that we will,” she said. “But I will respect her decision. If she wants to sing a duet with me, I would be very happy to.”
Love And Remembrance Charity Concert will be held on Nov 14 at The Star Theatre. Tickets from S$69 to S$198 (with limited S$1,000 VIP seats), are on sale at SISTIC today. Patrons who purchase limited donation tickets at S$2,000, S$500 and S$350 will also enjoy tax deductions. For more information, call Karen at 6355 6428.
