SINGAPORE — In a world of YouTube videos and free online shows, a new Channel 5 programme wants you to reach for your remote once more — and maybe build something afterwards.

Set to air next month, Do It Yourself is a hybrid of a magazine infotainment show on furniture and a sitcom, explained Lum Wai Loon, the show’s creator and co-producer.

“Not only do you enjoy the skit and comedy elements of the show, you are also taught how to create your own DIY furniture,” said the 37-year-old, who drew inspiration from mockumentaries and sitcoms like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory for the 13-episode show.

“I realised Singaporeans were experiencing frequent symptoms of Ikea-fatigue, where they were sick of going to the usual chain stores to purchase furniture,” he added.

The show revolves around siblings Matthew and Amanda Chong, played by real-life brother and sister Benjamin and Narelle Kheng of The Sam Willows. Despite having inherited an interior design firm from their grandfather, they’re far from business savvy. Cue celebrity Michelle Leong, played by veteran actress Aileen Tan, who promises to help — if they refurbish her apartment as cheaply as possible.

Lum observed: “Ikea designs are great, but are simply not enough any more. Independent young couples who just bought a flat, for example, want to build things of their own. If you want (more) proof, just take a look at all the small independent cafes sprouting up in the past few years!”

Nevertheless, getting people to go DIY is still quite the challenge.

Actress Aileen Tan agreed: “It’s very different from the old days, where people focused on the technical aspect of things instead. Mere knowledge is not enough, as hands-on work is equally as important.”

So does Lum have any advice? “Have the guts to try things. Be inspired to pick up the tools once again and make, create and own something that you youngsters can have a sense of ownership for.”

Do It Yourself premieres on July 15, 9pm, on Channel 5.
