SINGAPORE — Guinness celebrated Arthur’s Day here in bold fashion. This little red dot, by the way, was among the 55 countries around the world to commemorate Arthur’s Day, which was on Sept 27. And at The Promontory at Marina Bay on Friday night, the party was given a lift by American rock band The Fray, who headlined the show.

But first, a preface: Singapore band Ellipsis, winners of the “Play On The Day” band competition. Ellipsis beat out three other finalists, when The Fray chose them to open their concert here. And they did an admirable job, warming up the crowd with songs like Padawan and The Glass Box.

But it was the American rockers the people were waiting for. And The Fray didn’t disappoint, wowing the 2,000-odd crowd with their impeccable stage presence, and playing their hits such as You Found Me to Save A Life.

Lead singer Issac Slade didn’t even need to introduce the songs — the crowd burst into the first verse of every song the moment they heard him play the first few notes on the piano. Slade laughed: “Wow, you guys are singers!” he lauded, as the fans unabashedly sang along to every number. The rest of the band - bassist Joe King, lead guitarist Dave Welsh and drummer Ben Wysocki - also impressed the crowd with their musical skill and passionate playing, making the fan girls scream every once in awhile.

The band performed for almost 120 minutes, and made the most of it, playing hit after hit, leaving the fans wanting more when the set ended. And The Fray obliged: They took the stage one last time for the encore, with a riveting performance of their big hit, Never Say Never, ending the night with a perfect finish.
