Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon (KT Tunstall) | 3.5/5

SINGAPORE - Here’s what you need to do when you listen to Scottish singer-songwriter Kate “KT” Tunstall’s latest album: Read the album booklet word for word in order to fully understand the where the tracks that Tunstall has put up are coming from. Songs like Invisible Empire and Crescent Moon are two extremes - where Invisble Empire showcases a familiar country sound that Tunstall is known for, while injecting a deeply dark tone. Crescent Moon has a heavily dreamy vibe that one can get lost in, showing a completely different musicality. The single, Feel It All, features slow and steady drum beats, with Tunstall dreamily singing about the vulnerability of the heart. It’s probably no surprise, seeing as these sombre tracks were written after Tunstall’s father died in August last year, followed by her divorce after a four-year marriage. Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon is undoubtedly filled with raw emotional grief and loss of love. Other tracks like Made Of Glass, Now You Kill Me and Yellow Flower use simple-yet-powerful lyrics, portraying the fragility of life and love. This new sound is definitely far different from the likes of Black Horse And The Cherry Tree (the single which first jump-started her career) but no one’s complaining.
