If you’re a fan of the reigning Sexiest Man Alive (according to People magazine) and first time father Channing Tatum, then we’re pretty sure you’re well aware of the existence of a certain side-splitting song and accompanying music video that was aired on talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The incredibly suggestive R&B ballad (I Wanna) Channing All Over Your Tatum, which has gone viral, happens to be the direct result of the bromance between Tatum and his White House Down co-star Jamie Foxx.
Oh, and it was partly shot in Cancun while we were there (we’re at 3:51, right behind Matt Damon’s right shoulder).
In Roland Emmerich’s blow ’em up blockbuster, Tatum plays the tough secret service wannabe who must rescue Jamie Foxx-as-President when the bad guys blow up the White House. (Just to make things clear, it’s not Olympus Has Fallen — but mainly because this one’s got pec-flexing Chan The Man).
The chemistry between the two was so good that they’re also set to appear together twice in 2014: The Wachowskis’ sci-fi pic Jupiter Ascending and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Interestingly enough, the two had first met in Cancun the previous year. “I was here to do press work for 21 Jump Street, he was here for Django Unchained,” said Tatum. “Later, we went to the hotel to hang out. Mr Foxx decided to take the party into his own hands and started to DJ, and made it an unforgettable evening. I think me and my wife looked like we just got out of the pool by the end of the night — we were just soaking wet! It was an epic night.”
He continued: “Jamie and I really got on from the get-go! He is maybe one of the single-handedly most talented people I’ve ever met in my entire life. The man can literally do anything. There’s a piano in one of the hallways that leads to the residence in the White House, and in-between takes he’s just over there playing jazz and you’re in awe. I love him to death.”
Aww shucks. After that, who wouldn’t want to Channing all over his Tatum?
White House Down seems both a buddy comedy and a serious actioner with almost too-real politics thrown in.
Channing Tatum: Yeah, there’s a really interesting line between keeping it very serious and keeping it entertaining, I mean, we’re dealing with a complete White House takeover. It has comedy in it, but I would never do a movie that blows up the White House as a comedy. I wouldn’t call it funny. I would call it fun.
Does blowing it up mean anything to you guys symbolically?
Jamie Foxx: Let me put things in perspective. We are saying it is a movie. At the same time, we live in one of the most incredible places in the world where you get the freedom to do a movie where we blow the top of the capital off. You won’t get the chance to do it outside. Of course anyone would be devastated if anything like this would happen to our building in the real world. We tried to show how America is feeling these past years so, yes, we definitely have pride in America and in our sacred buildings.
Channing, you’re Hollywood’s hottest commodity right now: 21 Jump Street, The Vow, Magic Mike and now this. Thoughts?
Channing: Well, they say you’re only as good as your last movie or whatever, and, yes, I’m happy I’ve had three pretty successful films come out. If I have three unsuccessful movies come out, things will change, that’s just the way it goes.
Jamie: I’ll speak because he can’t see himself the way I can see him. (Smiles) Watching Channing’s transformation, what I appreciated about him was he wanted everything to be about “learning”. He wanted to be validated. I think that was a real testament to how he forms his characters. And at the very same time, he’s enthusiastic, you know? With the rise that he is having right now? All of the sudden, you’re wearing shades, talking through a publicist. (Mimics Channing’s voice) “I don’t want to breathe today. Just tell them I don’t want to breathe today. I am only breathing in. I’m not breathing out today!” And then someone tells you, “Erm, Channing is only breathing in today!” (Channing starts laughing hysterically)
So he doesn’t have that, because he’s got Southern roots and stuff like that. The way we both had chemistry on the set was, we respect each other and we had fun. And we can’t make everything too seriously. Roland (Emmerich) was throwing things at us, trying things in different ways. And it sort of gave us that chemistry. We always had chemistry but now you can see it on screen. I think that’s what really makes things work for our characters, our roles.
How far would you go to protect someone?
Channing: For someone I love or for someone I felt deserve it? Both are the same.
How about weapons?
Channing: Huh? Oops, I thought you were asking me, “Am I weapon?”
Jamie: He is a weapon. A weapon of seduction!
What makes Roland Emmerich so special as a director?
Channing: Personally I’ve watched his movies since I was a kid. For me, they were huge movies. Ginormous films. I can only think of three other directors who do them as big as he does, and as enjoyable as he does. But I didn’t know what to expect coming into the film. I didn’t know what kind of film-maker he was going to be. Was he really going to get into the minutiae of acting? Or was he going to be like “Just say your words and I’ll set the camera over here and something is going to explode”? I had no idea that he really loves the scene. He loves the dialogue. He loves the story and characters. He really creates a stage for you to play. And thank god Jamie and I got along so well…
Jamie: Yeah we did!
Channing, you play a father for the first time in White House Down and now you’re one yourself. Do you have any thoughts on how things are going to change?
Jamie: (Starts clapping) That’s my boy!
Channing: It’s really crazy being on this movie because I found out that Jenna (Dewan Tatum, his wife) was pregnant on this film! And at the very end, it was pretty nuts for me to be in the first movie that I ever had a child in and I had to deal with that. How will it affect me? I don’t know. I’m just taking it one day at a time.
Did you give him any advice, Jamie?
Channing: He’s given me a lot of advice!
Jamie: Well you will be amazed. Your life will change. And at a certain point, you’re going to start living your life for your kids. I used to party a lot. Like every day was a party and I wanted to see how much fun I could have. And then, when my daughter came, it was like “All right guys, you gotta clear out, we gotta this, we gottta that”. And you just start to transition into this, “Now they are the ones.” You want to make sure they have every opportunity to succeed. There is going to be the pressure of them growing up with a father who is famous. You gotta shape their world and make them understand that they don’t have to reach anything, that they can be their own person. At the same time, if we could find an app called “Struggle”, that would be great, because then we could download the app into them. (Laughs) Because you gotta be careful that they don’t feel like this is the real world. I always tell both my daughters, “This is Hollywood world.”
Just give them what you’ve been given by your parents, Chan.
