SINGAPORE — Thank you, Alexander Payne, director of the much acclaimed Election, Sideways and The Descendants, for providing the underrated Bruce Dern with one of the meatiest roles in a long illustrious career that includes Coming Home, the movie in which he earned himself a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Working from a script by Bob Nelson, the always steady Payne has allowed the actor to recapture the spotlight as the cantankerous Woody Grant, who might have a touch of Alzheimer’s.
Dern responds with a brilliant, authentic performance, free of pretence or trickery—he doesn’t play for the audience’s sympathy or understanding. He is fully deserving of his 2014 Oscar nomination for Best Actor, matched perfectly by a hilarious June Squibb (who also nabbed herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination) as his outspoken wife Kate.
