SINGAPORE — The well-received SG50 film anthology, 7 Letters, will get a one-week theatrical release at Golden Village cinemas later this month.
The omnibus, which features short films by Mr Royston Tan, Mr Eric Khoo, Mr K Rajagopal, Mr Jack Neo, Ms Tan Pin Pin, Mr Boo Junfeng and Mr Kelvin Tong, will be shown at seven cinemas from Aug 20 to 26.
Tickets will be available from tomorrow at Golden Village sales channels, including box office counters and its website.
Demand for the film has been strong. All 6,000 tickets allotted for a three-day gala screening at Capitol Theatre from July 24 to 26 were snapped up. Tickets for these screenings were given free to movie-goers in a donate-as-you-wish scheme, with all proceeds going to seven beneficiaries selected by the film-makers.
The keen interest prompted the National Museum of Singapore to come forward to host additional screenings, which are scheduled to be held this weekend from Aug 8 to 10.
These tickets, too, drew an enthusiastic response and were gone within hours of being made available for free on a first-come-first-served basis last Saturday.
Mr Royston Tan, who spearheaded the project and also served as the anthology’s executive producer, said the film-makers were “extremely touched and moved” by the overwhelming support. “We have received so many calls and requests for 7 Letters to be shown in more theatres so that more people can watch it,” he said.
“The overwhelming support towards this film is very encouraging and humbling. We hope more Singaporeans will experience this meaningful project, while making a positive difference in our community.”
He also said Golden Village was an ideal partner to help bring 7 Letters to more people. Ms Clara Cheo, chief executive of Golden Village Multiplex said: “Golden Village has been supportive of 7 Letters from the very beginning by using our various media platforms to promote the charity screenings at Capitol Theatre previously. We are honoured and happy to be able to release 7 Letters theatrically on our screens islandwide to reach out to more Singaporeans.”
Net proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the 7 Letters’ beneficiaries, after covering any theatrical and distribution costs.
Mr Melvin Ang, chief executive of mm2 Asia, which is the theatrical co-distributor alongside Golden Village Pictures said: “This is an important and meaningful SG50 initiative that features the unique voices of seven of Singapore’s most outstanding directors. It definitely deserves to be seen by more people, and we’re most pleased to work with Royston and Golden Village to make the commercial release of this movie a reality.”
