SINGAPORE — Stephen Chow’s highly anticipated latest film The Mermaid is scheduled to open in Singapore this Chinese New Year on Feb 8.

Produced and directed by the multi-hyphenate Hong Kong superstar, The Mermaid features a bevy of stars including Lin Yun, Deng Chao, Show Luo, Kris Wu Yifan, Zhang Yuqi, Li Shangzheng and Zhang Mei’e. The story follows what happens after a mermaid saves a professor who then falls in love with her.

Fans will be pleased to know that Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle star will continue to instil his signature absurdist humour with this new film, showing off his ability to balance seemingly random crass jokes with effective story lines.

Chow’s last film, Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons, saw worldwide box office takings of US$215 million (S$179 million) and is rated as one of the highest grossing Chinese language films of all time. Will he be able to continue his blockbuster success streak with The Mermaid? Only time will tell.
