Reasons to watch Taylor Swift’s Singapore show
SINGAPORE — Yes, you heard right. Barely a year after her last visit, Taylor Swift is coming back to town. The reigning Queen of Pop (step aside, Madonna) confirmed yesterday that she will bring her 1989 World Tour to the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Nov 7 and 8. And it doesn’t matter if you are a hard-core Swiftie, a closet fan who sings her songs with wild abandon only in the privacy of your shower, or an innocent passer-by who thinks Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are the same person. Swift’s show will be the one to watch this year.
Why, you ask? Because Swift’s got Style (with a capital S). Let’s face it, the American musician is arguably the most important voice in music now. She is the only artiste in history to have three albums — 2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s Red and 2014’s 1989 — sell more than one million copies in their first week of release. And the numbers don’t lie: 1989 is also the highest-selling album release since 2002 and the only album to go platinum last year. Yet her fans love her because she’s classy, down-to-earth and behaves more like a slave to her cats, Meredith and Olivia Benson, than your regular bratty superstar.
Not only that, she has shown that she’s Fearless in the face of mega-corporations. Didn’t you hear how Apple, one of the biggest companies in the world, back-pedalled on its policy after the 25-year-old openly criticised the company for withholding artiste royalties during the free trial period for its new music-streaming service? Last year, she also made the bold move to remove her music from Spotify, which led to a lot of talk about Spotify’s renumeration plans for the artistes it features on its streaming service. You have to admire somebody who can do what record companies, despite their clout, couldn’t.
Of course, Swift has received some flak for her actions — for having an album that’s too “pop”, for winning too many awards or having that rap version of Bad Blood (the video is cool, though). But hey, she’s still riding high.
And what better way is there to party the night away than to Shake It Off in the company of a performer like her? She’s funny, adorable and simply electric on stage. Those who’ve been to her previous concerts here can attest to that. She has that ability to make every person in the arena think that she’s talking only to them and to take command of the stage — just watch her live performances on YouTube and you’ll see what we mean.
Oh, lest we forget, she also has an ice cream named after her. Cornetto announced its team-up with Swift and has made the new limited edition Cornetto Taylor Swift Caramel Shake ice cream.
The company says it’s an “irresistible combination of caramel, chocolate and nuts in an ice cream” adding that the Cornetto Taylor Swift Caramel Shake will “take you on a journey of tastes and textures”.
Cornetto also said the specially designed packaging includes a code eligible for point redemption and an opportunity to win premium seats at Swift’s gig. You can also redeem your points for deliciously cool Cornetto merchandise, such as 1989 drawstring bags, an autographed 1989 album, Cornetto instant cameras, co-branded T-shirts and more. You can grab a cone come Aug 1.
Of course, we’re not sure if you want to be stuffing your mouth with ice cream at the gig, because you’ll want to be singing along at the show.
Truth be told, we can probably sing or hum every single tune in her songbook. Yes, even that one where she sounds like she’s singing about getting along with Starbucks lovers (okay, fine, the lyric is “Got a long list of ex-lovers”). Her songs are so catchy that you’ll find yourself dancing along even if you didn’t know every lyric to hits such as Blank Space, You Belong With Me and Back To December.
Because it’s a Love Story when it comes to Taylor Swift: All you need to do is just say yes.
